FINANCIAL LITERACY II
BASIC SKILLS AND MONEY ADVICE

Who the course is for: Money Advisers, Training Officers and others who will be delivering Financial Literacy training or advice to clients with Basic Skills needs in literacy and/or numeracy. Trainees should ideally have attended the course "Financial Literacy for Money Advisers" and have some prior knowledge of what is meant by financial Literacy training, preferably with some knowledge of the kind of topics that would be covered. Trainees are encouraged to bring their own resources to be adapted for those with basic skills needs, although resources will be provided. This course will be available from May 2002.

Aims:

• To promote awareness of the size and scale of the problems facing clients with basic skills needs
• To develop strategies for acknowledging a Basic Skills need in a client
• To explore how money advice provision can be adapted to ensure equal access and opportunites for clients
• To present Basic Skills training in a poitive way to clients

Course Content:

• The Basic Skills Needs of the UK - and overview of the extent of adult basic skills needs in this country, and the implications for Money Advisers/Financial Literacy trainers. Also includes a discussion on what is being done currently to address the problem ie. The introduction of Financial Capability/Citizenship curricula in UK schools.
• Strategies for identifying and Addressing Basic Skills Needs in Clients;how resources can be adapted to ensure that clients are getting the most out of the time they spend with you; using sound/video as well as written handouts, theuse of ICT, adapting written material to make it easier to read etc.
• Further Training in Basic Skills for Clients; a look at how other organisations are addressing basic skills needs; for example, by holding weekly "Money Matters" clubs, forming partnerships with collegues and other adult education institutions, providing worksheets for clients etc.
